S. Tyrone (Ty) Alexander is the former executive vice president, human resources and administrative services for Highmark Inc. In this position, he provided executive leadership and strategic direction in development and implementation of policies and programs related to human resources, including staffing, benefits, compensation, employee relations, and training and development for more than 11,000 employees. In addition, he was responsible for leadership of administrative services, including the lease, purchase and maintenance of facilities, as well as corporate procurement, fleet management, food services, corporate travel, risk management, and office administrative support operations for all Highmark locations.
Prior to joining Highmark, Alexander was senior vice president, human resources and services, for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield in New York City. In a career that has spanned more than 35 years, Alexander has served in human resources and operational executive positions with CIGNA Healthcare, DuPont, Sara Lee, Pitney Bowes and Corning.
Alexander holds two master's degrees — one in finance and one in management/organization development from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management (Illinois). He received his bachelor's degree in political science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is currently completing his doctoral degree in human resources development at George Washington University.
Alexander serves on the boards of Institute for Supply Management™ and the Epilepsy Foundation Board. He is former chairman of the Pennsylvania Business Leadership Network and the Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom and has served as a member of the Pittsburgh Ballet, Youthworks, Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, and Life'sWork of Western Pennsylvania. He is currently a commissioner, Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board and is a member of several professional associations, including the Society for Human Resource Management, Human Resources Executive Roundtable and the Human Resource Institute.
